Gabby Chu
Gabby Chu was born in South Korea and spent her teenage years in Southeast Asia, living between Cambodia and Vietnam. Later, she moved to Australia for her studies. Growing up around different cultures and traditions shaped her open and thoughtful view of the world.
After finishing her studies, Gabby returned to Korea to focus more deeply on her art. She worked as a tattoo artist while also exploring other materials such as acrylic paint, ink, textiles, and ceramics. During this time, she studied under Jang Dong Lee, who helped her better understand the differences between Eastern and Western art.
A turning point in her artistic journey came during a visit to Tongdosa. There, under the guidance of the Buddhist monk Seongpa, she was introduced to the traditional art of Ottchil (Korean lacquer).
Gabby’s work is inspired by traditional Asian art forms such as Minhwa, Ukiyo-e, and Ottchil, combined with elements of Western Surrealism and Minimalism. She blends these influences into a unique style she calls “Abstract Formative.”
