Danica Karaičić is a visual artist and design educator. She graduated in architecture from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade and received her PhD in visual arts from the VCA, University of Melbourne. She works in the fields of architecture, spatial design, visual arts and performance. Themes of the relationship between body and space, and the sense of self in the world, are integral to her creative practice. In her latest works, using video, photography and new technologies, she explores touch, boundaries, bodily autonomy and consent. She has exhibited in Europe and Australia.

How often do we feel free to fully and authentically express ourselves? 

In AUTOEROTIKON: unspoken, using replicas of my facial expressions cast in different materials, I explore the transition from total freedom of being oneself to self-censorship. I create intimate yet exhibitionist spaces between myself and the observer, in which I present a fetishised version of myself. In gentle, meditative encounters with the body artefacts, I engage in self-reflection and self-eroticism, using touch to further explore identity and embodiment as a woman.
