DAVIDE DICENSO

Exhibition dates. 20 April - 1 May, 2022
Opening Reception : Thur 21 April 2022, 6:00 - 8.30pm.

Most of Davide’s artwork revolves around the human form. His focus is not necessarily on painting the form itself, but on its emotional surroundings. He does not plan out his work but rather sets out to try and capture a mood.

His figures tend to be painted onto a ‘quiet’ background however he adds what are seemingly random geometric shapes and/or distorts the figure itself to symbolize how our true-self can be obscured and confused by both inner and outer thoughts and influences.

The Interview

Interview with artist : Davide DiCenso

1. Your paintings are quite ghostly, what has influenced the use of the spectral figure in your work?

This question gave me alot to ponder as I never considered my paintings having the same figure in them over and over again. When I start a painting, in my mind at least, it is very much a different figure or personality I am trting to create.

As to the ' spectral' nature of them I guess I see my figures as more of fragile nature than ghostly. I do want to try and paint the inner-self as opposed to the hard-edged and definate nature of our outer-selves.

This leads me to the question of whether our inner-selves take human form at all, but its an artistic subject that just comes naturally to me.

2. What are some of the techniques used to create texture in your paintings?

The texture in my work is created both intentionally by applying thick under-paint with my beloved pallette knives and also by chance.

Because I don't plan out my images they tend to go through a few versions before the final figure emerges. These 'versions' leave me with some interesting textural effects on the canvas.
