Hugo Mathias is an artist from New Zealand and currently living in Melbourne, Australia. As a multi-disciplinary artist, Hugo’s work explores everyday objects and our subjective associations with them.

Hugo has exhibited his work in New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan, with two of his pieces residing in the James Wallace Arts Trust collection in New Zealand, and one piece in the Haengchon Art Museum collection in South Korea. He received a Bachelor of Design in 2011 from Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand.

REVERB

“Reverb” explores the beauty in the banal. Through acrylic paintings of common objects, I delve into memories and our subjective interpretations. These works aim to make the ordinary awesome, sparking nostalgia and briefly diverting our thoughts from life's impermanence.

Inspired by the study of archeology, in which the past is pieced together from scattered clues, the works explore our human compulsion to categorise, presenting an idealised scientific approach to history and evidence.

Using a process of pedantic painting with brilliantly bold colours, I hope to remind the viewer of the splendour in the simple and the enduring in the ephemeral.
