Third Space

The work in Third Space is a manifestation of the cultural void I feel I exist within. As a Filipino-Australian, I often feel a level of disconnection from my heritage and culture. I don’t feel Asian and I don’t feel Australian; I feel like something alien or 'other'. There are parts of me that I feel are missing, incompatible or incomplete, which lead me to feel 'less than' and never quite enough.

The bodies and figures I’ve painted are self-portraits, but they are not meant to be a representation of my physical likeness. They are my spiritual, emotional and mental bodies. They are my way of processing, building and defining my cultural identity.
