FOR LEASE
"For Lease" is an exploration into the struggle for secure housing and the unattainable standards that many Australians face in the quest for a place to call home. Through a series of interior paintings, the Lily Platts aims to shed light on the difficulties of finding affordable housing and the turmoil that comes with the search for a stable place to live.
This exhibition draws inspiration from Platts personal experience as a renter. While looking for a house, she became fascinated by online platforms like Fairyfloss on Facebook, which serve as ways in which people connect and present themselves online. The show explores these glimpses into people's lives, alongside an underlying sense of domesticity and unease. Through this work, the Platts' goal is to capture the intricate interplay between the yearning for security and the unsettling reality of housing instability that many are facing today.
In previous work, the Platts primarily focused on objects, delving into their lives and society's patterns of consumption. However, in this series, she shifts away from tangible objects and instead turns her attention to the spaces themselves. The absence of objects becomes a symbol for the lack of security and stability within these spaces.
