Pamela See (Xue Mei-Ling) is a visual artist who practices contemporary papercutting. The medium in the form we recognise today evolved in China between the fourth and sixth centuries.
.…by Celestials is a participatory artwork designed to help residents of Fitzroy and the broader Sol Gallery community mark the beginning of the Gregorian and Lunar New Years. It involves the installation of a papercut composition in The Window Room.
The primary subject will be a red Eastern Bearded Dragon. In the background of the composition will be white Casuarina and Chinese cucumber flowers. These will symbolize the contributions Chinese migrants made during the 19th century as furniture makers and farmers.
The participants will embellish this foundation with their own colourful cutouts. They will be encouraged to make papercuts that reflect other ways Celestials contribute to the Australian cultural landscape.
*As China was formerly regarded the Celestial Kingdom, “Celestials” is a term used to describe settlers from a Chinese background up until the early 20th century.
