Shang Kuan Ding Ya’s ceramic sculptures reflect bodily movement and inner transformation. Rooted in a practice of traditional martial arts, clay is worked as an extension of the body—twisting, stretching, and pressing in rhythm with breath and tension. Each piece records gesture and emotion, exploring the balance between control and surrender.
Influenced by Jungian theory, mythological creatures and monsters appear as symbolic forms that reveal human emotions and psychological complexity. The transformation of clay—from soft, responsive material to hardened, luminous form mirrors the evolution of the self, where fragility and strength coexist. The work captures a continuous state of becoming, where movement, myth, and matter converge.
