Shared Horizons: Exploring the Thai-Australian Relationship

“Shared Horizons: Exploring the Thai-Australian Relationship" celebrates the deep and multifaceted connection between Thailand and Australia. Through the artistic lenses of three artists—Shin Koyama, Emma Hodges, and Kitikong Tilokwattanotai—this exhibition delves into the diverse cultural landscapes and shared experiences that have shaped the Thai-Australian relationship.

Shin Koyama, a versatile Japanese-Australian artist, works with various mediums such as printmaking, ceramics, wood carving, and painting. Based in Chiang Mai, Shin is constructing a private museum to exhibit the works of Thai, Japanese, and Australian artists.

Emma Hodges, a non-binary artist, weaves their personal experiences of their mixed Thai, Chinese, and Anglo-Australian heritage into their art, acting as a bridge between the three cultures.

Kitikong Tilokwattanotai, a Thai artist, received his Master of Art in Printmaking from the University of New South Wales. Tilokwattanotai's bold use of colours invites viewers to explore the shared narratives and connections that bind Thailand and Australia together.

"Shared Horizons: Exploring the Thai-Australian Relationship" serves as a reminder of the enduring bonds and shared histories between Thailand and Australia. Through the diverse perspectives and artistic interpretations of Shin Koyama, Emma Hodges, and Kitikong Tilokwattanotai, this exhibition celebrates the beauty of cultural exchange and the strength of a relationship that extends across shared horizons.

SHIN KOYAMA

Shin, a versatile artist, explores diverse mediums like printmaking, ceramics, wood carving, and painting. His work combines contemporary themes with traditional Japanese influences.

Born in 1947 in Isesaki, Japan, Shin started as a textile designer for Ishihara Sangyo. In 1983, he moved to Sydney, Australia, establishing a printmakers gallery.

In 2013, Shin expanded internationally, opening a ceramics studio in Jingdezhen, China. He also set up studios in Arita, Japan (2014), and on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, Thailand (2018). Collaborating with local artists, these spaces foster creativity and craftsmanship.

Based in Chiang Mai, Shin is deeply involved in the local art scene and is currently building a private museum to showcase the works of Thai, Japanese, and Australian artists.

EMMA RANI HODGES

Emma Rani Hodges is an emerging artist who grew up on the unceded lands of the Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri people. Their practice explores their mixed Thai, Chinese and Anglo-Australian heritage through a post-colonial framework. Working in the language of expanded painting, they draw on personal narratives and insert marginalised voices into the dominant cultural discourse of white Australia. Fluctuating between image, text and object, their work resists easy categorisation. They combine incongruous material (painting, textiles and found objects) to assert that their multiethnic identity can exist as a cohesive unified whole and challenge the view that individuals of mixed heritage are 'caught between two worlds'.
