AMY COHEN
Born in Haifa, Israel, Amy Cohen began her higher education studies in Ceramic Industrial Design at Bezalel, Israel’s preeminent academic institution for art, design, and architecture. In 2001, Cohen transferred her studies to La Trobe University, Bendigo, to major in Ceramics Fine Arts, completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons)
in 2003. Amy has since then been consistently exhibiting in Australia, with works in the permanent collections of both the Bendigo and Warrnambool Art Galleries, and in 2023 was a finalist at Deakin University’s Small Sculpture Awards. For Amy, shell forms are a visual language of growth; her work explores shells' architectural purpose as habitat and protection. Cohen's lifelong fascination with shell forms has led to over two decades of experimentation in form, materiality, and texture. For her, shells are an echo of the life forms that build them, a haunting remnant of an alien world we try to understand.

I started working with fibre in 2020 as a way of coping with the restrictions surrounding our lives. I connected with the repetitiveness of the techniques, and being able to work at home was a great advantage. I also found that the materials and technique lent themselves easily to my forms. My work in fibre ranges from small-scale forms made of micro-macramé techniques which I often turn into necklaces or brooches and larger scale sculptures made out of raffia, paper and fabric, using techniques derived from basket making.
