CREATURE CREATURE is an artist duo consisting of Chanel Tang and Ambrose Rehorek based in Melbourne in Australia. They first met at university and ‘flirted through art’ until they formed an official union in 2011 under one name. Creature Creature was chosen from a quote in the 1960’s film A Bucket of Blood;
“A Creature is a Creature…or it is an artist!” Since then, they have continued a collaborative art practice that spans across exhibiting art, murals, street art, design and illustration.
Their work represents duality and the sum of a whole, a message of togetherness, states of balance, yin and yang. Their partnership breaks the myth of the lone artist, as collaboration is an instinctive ritual for them in realms of art, love and life. Collaboration is about preserving diversity, creating something complex, layered and fluid. The beauty of coming together.
Born in Adelaide, Ambrose has a Degree in Visual Arts from the University of South Australia.
Chanel was born in Wellington, New Zealand, moved to Australia in 1998 where she did her Degree in Fine Art at Monash University. They met doing a Graduate Diploma in Graphic Design at RMIT.

It was a joy to explore this theme depicting this supreme animal of the Chinese zodiac and the only mythological creature. Our artwork shows the transition from the Year of the Water Rabbit into The Year of the Wood Dragon, who is wrapping around a Bonsai Tree and its horns morphing into expanded branches. For more visual delights we have included dragonflies and dragonfruit which gave inspiration to the colour scheme of this vivid piece.
Our new print was created with the help of the best local fine art printers Hound & Bone, and features hand painted embellishments with pearlescent paint across all the dragonflies with sparkle and shine in the light.

The folklore, mythology and culture connected with the Chinese zodiac has always sparked such powerful visual inspiration for us. In this print we have included all twelve animals linked in a circle as well as the five nature elements fire, water, wood, metal and earth, which are significant in Chinese philosophy. A creation, or generating system to explain many phenomena.
The Chinese zodiac tells tales of cosmic cycles of time and perpetual repetition, which melts into our composition of our 2023 exhibition Never Ever Ending.

This print is inspired by Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese art that has had a strong influence on us. The term Ukiyo-e (浮世絵) translates as 'picture[s] of the floating world' and includes famous woodblock prints such as Hokusai’s “The Great Wave.”
We are inspired by this era not only stylistically but also by the power and reach one image can have, making art accessible to everyday people. In Edo Japan, it is said that you could buy an Ukiyo-e masterpiece for the price of a bowl of noodles, making it affordable for common city dwellers and the merchant class to decorate their homes.
We wanted to pay homage to this approach, and create an image that tells this story. Here the crane's beaks make up a pair of chopsticks linked to a universe within a pond, within a vessel. Everything is connected within this little floating world.
The price is determined by the cost of a bowl of noodles. We took a reference from one of our favourite restaurants Ippudo Ramen where the delicious Akamaru Special is $30.
We have turned to Letterpress Printing to produce this unique print, and to stay true to its woodblock origins it is stamped with a hand carved block made from Jelutong wood.
