Erin Ginty (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Walyalup (Fremantle, WA). Her practice involves examining human existence in a world hurling towards climate catastrophe, with an interest in speculative fiction and world-building. She values recycling and repurposing of materials and creates work in the form of installation, ceramics and photography.
Understanding Permanence ii (2022) is the second iteration of a window exhibit that explores the intersections between consumer culture and the resilience and permeance of fired clay. It examines two different ways of hand-building: clay and construction, exploring how we use our bodies to connect to the earth and destroy it. As we are increasingly disconnected from the natural environment, using clay as a guide to resist the virtual world and come back to earth is vital. The form of the ceramics denies traditional, utility ceramic making that values symmetry and proportions and instead investigates shapes that are distorted and irregular, directly opposing the values used in building construction.
