Evolution Forwards, Evolution Backwards.

My video sculptural artwork is speculative fictional commentary on humankind’s disregard for the climate crises and its consequences.

My video “Evolution Forwards, Evolution Backwards” was shot on location at South Maroubra, NSW, from 2019 – 2021 at different times of the day, year, and varying weather conditions using animated hand-sewn anthropomorphic creatures in stop motion animation.

Employing no straight timeline, a story subtly identifies earth’s vulnerability and that of its emerging creatures. Providing a slight documentary feel, the isolated coastal location depicts earth having overcome consequentially extinct humankind’s destructive disregard of climate crises, atemporarily healing itself under its own rhythms. Humankind’s evolutionary descendants emerge without prior knowledge of themselves or their surroundings. Exhibiting their vulnerability through exploration, they hatch from chrysalises to explore their own and each other’s bodies, mimic birds drinking, attempt flight, recognising their affinity with saltwater from which their evolutionary ancestors emerged.
