“Trance” The Fifth Instalment (Part I/II) of “The Magic Hour”
With a witch referring to a magical practitioner, and/or an independent and outspoken woman, my project aimed to dissect the history of the occult, including the history of Goddesses and female deities, while exposing and criticising the often-fictionalised history of a witch. It examined historical and modern factual and fictional witchcraft portrayals.
My research showed that traditional societal systems that socialise feminine traits prioritise etiquette, compromise, and a willingness to serve men. There is a moral uneasiness woven into these mythologies and legends, with female occult entities exhibiting moral turpitude contrary to those expectations. This reminds me of the allegations against witches during the Salem Witch Trials and the rationale for witch hunts in third world countries today.
In this exhibit, I was influenced by the psychological impact the mistreatment and fear of witchcraft has had on its practitioners, accusers, accused and mythology figures. I've chosen to employ green screen photography to simulate actual/mythological events and situations.
This point in my research is such a heavy undertaking that I have had to split it up into two potential exhibits, with this being part one.
