ALL OF THE LIGHTS BUT NONE OF THE JOY

Every year from October to November, Burmese people celebrate a variety of light festivals, the most renowned being Thadingyut in October and Thazaungdaing in November. Known as some of the happiest people in the world, Burmese communities have traditionally celebrated these festivals with abundant joy, generosity, and a shared sense of respect for revered figures such as the sangha and elders.

Unfortunately, since Myanmar’s 2021 Military Coup, joy has become a casualty. While the Junta and other violators of our people’s free will may still illuminate temples and lanterns, these lights now lack the spirit that once infused them.

This installation is dedicated to our son, Yosone Aung, born in October of 2020 in Australia. Although he has never set foot in Burma, Yosone, affectionately known as Yo Yo, innately longs for all things Burmese. The installation features lanterns suspended from driftwood and stones, symbolising our collective hope despite the ongoing tragedy in our homeland.
