Melbourne-based artist Sasha Heath works primarily in illustration and mural painting, recently expanding into sculpture. Her practice translates illustration’s expressive language into whimsical ceramic forms rich in narrative and personality.
Using animals as portraiture, Sasha explores emotion and human connection, selecting species whose behaviours, expressions and physical characteristics reflect her family members’ personalities. Playfulness, stubbornness, gentleness, curiosity, strength and vulnerability emerge through animal forms. Beyond portraiture, her sculptures revisit childhood memories, trauma and relationships giving physical form to complex experiences as a means of reflection and letting go.
Sasha hand-builds her sculptures in white raku clay, allowing subtle marks and imperfections to become part of each work’s character.
At the heart of her practice is an exploration of family dynamics, the traits we recognise in one another, and the affection, humour and complexity that shape our closest relationships.
