The Interview

Interview with Curator: Tegan Iversen

1. What was the inspiration behind curating Very Superstitious? Do superstitions play a role in your life?

I am a little superstitious myself- I try not to open umbrellas indoors, walk under ladders & am quite often knocking on wood. I'm very intrigued by superstitions & wanted to create an exhibition delving into them, with artists interpreting each superstition however they like. I've loved seeing which superstitions each artist has chosen to depict, I've also really enjoyed learning a few new ones I hadn't heard of previously. Such as in April JY Kim's works she explores a couple of love-related Korean superstitions, one of them being "gifting shoes to your lover would make them leave you (with the shoes that you gifted them to)". Also sam mckenna's work 'Reaper' which references a Filipino superstition that "combing your hair at night will invite the early death of your parents, so it's best to be avoided.” I have since made a habit of combing my hair during daylight hours.

2. How did you go about choosing the artists and artworks exhibited in the show? Will you continue to curate in the same way and what other projects do you hope to work on in the future?

I tried to select a quite varied group of artists, particularly ranging in methods & medium, but in general, I tend to lean towards artists who are very playful in the work they create, often creating colourful work & with practices that seem true to themselves. A fair few of the artists featured in this exhibition I have worked with previously, some of the artists I am lucky enough to call friends & then others I saw their work on social media or in other exhibitions I've attended & reached out & come opening night will be the first time I get to meet them in person! It was a rather large exhibition to curate, but I am so happy with how the show has turned out. There are a couple more exhibitions I'm looking forward to curating later this year & I already have quite a large group show organised for next year I'm pretty excited about!
