INSTALLATION - PERFORMANCE - TEA
by Yumi Umiumare

Buried TeaBowl -OKUNI is an intimate and epic solo performance installation bringing together dance, text, song and tea ceremony with stunning film captured in 2021 during lockdown. The work is inspired by the Japanese historical female dancer and shaman Okuni, who initiated Kabuki theatre in the early 1600s, which women were banned from performing after these times.

At the height of her powers, Yumi Umiumare, Melbourne performance legend and Australia’s leading Butoh artist, unearths precious sacred female power which has been buried throughout history. Yumi channels the multi- faceted character of Okuni who was so powerful, yet fragile and complex, to reawaken her spirit through excavating these buried stories and myths.

During the performance season, the installation is open daily from 11am-5pm.
Pop up Tea ceremonies (Japanese organic matcha served with sweets) will be held on 7 (Sat), 8 (Sun) and 13 (Fr), 14 (Sat) 15 (Sun) May between 2-5pm.

Please do not attend the gallery if you are unwell, have been to a COVID19 exposure site in the last 14 days or been in contact with anyone COVID19.
