GRACE ALLEN
Heavenly Creatures
Collection of unbound posters held together by banderole & Inkjet Prints on Canson Baryta Photographique. ‘Heavenly Creatures’ critiques the ways women are presented in fashion photography. The commercially inspired photographs accentuate rather than censor aspects of the female body that are deemed undesirable including fat; flesh; folds; pubic hair; menstrual blood; acne; and discharge. These bodily aspects are not only included but enhanced to challenge the idea that women can only exist in the space of fashion photography when they are presented as passive objects of perfection. Often the female body is fragmented and objectified through the male gaze and traditional beauty standards. The poster book format fragments bodies into ambiguous shapes to further reinforce the idea that bodies are abstracted through methods of their presentation.
