SPACE 2: KATIE STARKEY

Exhibition dates. 1 - 12 June 2022
Opening Reception : Thur 2 June 2022, 6:00 - 8.30pm.

Katie Starkey's contemporary drawing practice brings together her deep love of nature and a curiosity about colour.

During the quietness of extended lockdowns Katie grew aware of the connection between colours and how they made her feel. She found herself consistently creating monochromatic drawings in different shades of blue and soon realised that as she found the colour blue both calming and energising, she had been intuitively working with a colour that suited her mood. This personal experience increased her sense of curiosity about the relationship that exists between colour and emotion, and she began conducting further reading and exploration of theories around colour psychology.

Her subsequent drawings displayed in this exhibition, centre around an exploration of colour relationships, with the colours chosen directly influenced by Katie's colour psychology research. The drawings are also an intuitive response to her plant subject matter. The process Katie uses to arrive at the final drawing is to create multiple versions of the work, experimenting each time with her mediums of copic marker and pen, and building upon the previous exploration in the following work. This playful approach results in original drawings that are rich with diverse mark-making and have varied colour-palettes. Katie's drawings highlight her appreciation of the beauty of plants, her attention to detail, and her interest in colour.

Katie Starkey is a studio artist at River Studios in West Melbourne. She grew up in coastal New South Wales and trained in visual arts at universities in Barcelona and Buenos Aires. She holds various qualifications including a Bachelor of Science (Architecture) from the University of Sydney and a Postgraduate Diploma in the Design and Direction of Digital Projects from the Barcelona School of Design and Engineering. She regularly exhibits in artist-run galleries in Melbourne.
