IMMATERIAL ME
When purchasing fashion products, the majority make the buying decision based on the aesthetic and price. But what is the real cost of good value fashion everyone wants? While 85% of textiles end up in landfills, the low prices are enslaving workers and destroying cultural value. It’s no longer cool to be a fashion designer. The manufacturing sector suffers the most with a bare minimum profit, the quality of the product is also compromised while the retailer can still make their profit after a 75% end-of-season discount.
IMMATERIAL ME is a re-edition of IMMATERIAL MEASURE, an anti-fashion project collaborating with artist/ musician Saul Jarvie, originally exhibited in 2019. In pre-COVID time, the mask must have been the most unfashionable accessory then. In 2022, the mask symbolises the new clean society, as our priorities radically changed, we are more distant from each other and welcome disposable items for the sake of “safety”. Removing the boundary between art, design, and fashion, the project aims to provoke thoughts about your personal values from different perspectives.
