SCARLETTE BACCINI

SPACE 3: SCARLETTE BACCINI

Exhibition dates. 29 NOV - 10 DEC 2023
Opening Reception : Thursday 30 NOV 2023, 6:00 - 8.30pm.

Scarlette's first collection of paintings is an expression of love and reverence for the human body. Using a unique approach to watercolour, acrylics and gouache, and a biologist's eye, these works take delight in the sublime tragedy of being a living creature, in our human form as it exists in the natural world, and in the absurdity of trying to place our biological selves within social and cultural constructions.

Anatomised human forms show the ways in which our bodies are both vulnerable and powerful, both deeply personal but also universal, and other paradoxes of our physical existence.

DIFFERENCE AND REPETITION IN FIELDS OF COLOUR

The paintings in this exhibition are influenced by Deleuze's ideas about difference and repetition. The paintings are composed of several overlapping and intersecting layers of lines and patterns within colour fields. The process involves repetition, intuition, and reflection. The repetition involves painting while listening to music, intuitively selecting colours and applying thin washes of colour until a resonating multi-layered multi-tonal colour field develops. Additionally, I draw squiggly lines and patterns that assemble and detach across the canvas to reflect my mosaic mind as it shifts from one thought to another; or to reflect the music I listen to as it shifts from one tune to silence and then another tune. I continue this process creating different plateaus of lines, patterns, washes and experiences until the painting reaches some form of resolution. My painting process involves repetition but each repetition creates a new experience thus creating ‘difference’ and new pictorial resolves.

He received a Bachelor of Design in 2011 from Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand.

REVERB

“Reverb” explores the beauty in the banal. Through acrylic paintings of common objects, I delve into memories and our subjective interpretations. These works aim to make the ordinary awesome, sparking nostalgia and briefly diverting our thoughts from life's impermanence.

Inspired by the study of archeology, in which the past is pieced together from scattered clues, the works explore our human compulsion to categorise, presenting an idealised scientific approach to history and evidence.

Using a process of pedantic painting with brilliantly bold colours, I hope to remind the viewer of the splendour in the simple and the enduring in the ephemeral.

ART AVISO

In collaboration with Skunk Control

Chandeliers have been used for centuries as a symbol of luxury and elegance in homes and public buildings of significance. Early Chandeliers were made of wood or iron but over time chandeliers became more elaborate and were constructed of more decadent materials, precious metals, glass, mirrors or adorned with reflective crystals. Originally used to illuminate castles and palaces chandeliers eventually became included in grand homes as symbols of wealth and status…

Art Aviso Artist are collaborating with Skunk Control to create a ‘Chandelier’ - an evolving global art installation project, exploring the themes of excess, decadence, overuse, and wastefulness by the collective construction of a ‘chandelier’ made by connecting small three-dimensional artworks into a hanging installation artwork of recycled and repurposed materials.

ECHOES IN PAINT

New work from independent artist Steve Leadbeater.

This body of work combines themes of ancient myths, spirituality and the human condition. The visual approach is full of wild expressive energy that elicits an emotional response. As joyful as it can be confronting.

Figurative works transition into abstraction and then back again. In this way they are like echoes. Echoes of each other, the process of their creation, and the influences, conscious or otherwise, that have shaped the work.

ALL OF THE LIGHTS BUT NONE OF THE JOY

Every year from October to November, Burmese people celebrate a variety of light festivals, the most renowned being Thadingyut in October and Thazaungdaing in November. Known as some of the happiest people in the world, Burmese communities have traditionally celebrated these festivals with abundant joy, generosity, and a shared sense of respect for revered figures such as the sangha and elders.

Unfortunately, since Myanmar’s 2021 Military Coup, joy has become a casualty. While the Junta and other violators of our people’s free will may still illuminate temples and lanterns, these lights now lack the spirit that once infused them.

This installation is dedicated to our son, Yosone Aung, born in October of 2020 in Australia. Although he has never set foot in Burma, Yosone, affectionately known as Yo Yo, innately longs for all things Burmese. The installation features lanterns suspended from driftwood and stones, symbolising our collective hope despite the ongoing tragedy in our homeland.

“Towards Visibility - an exhibition of oil paintings, etchings and typewriter art”

JENNIFER VANDELEUR

When painting or drawing Jennifer always has the subject present in front of her easel and never works from photographs.

Often, mostly using charcoal, she draws lithe, lively models at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere during the cold months of Paris winter. Some of these are included in her still life oil paintings after returning to Australia.

The New South Wales painter and sculptor, David Andrews, was her tutor and remains a great inspiration, together with Caravaggio, Balthus, Egon Schiele, Edward Hopper, Giorgio Morandi, Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard.

The task of an artist is to express subjectivity, to translate a personal view of the world. It is also to ponder the constant question of whether beauty develops out of form, or whether form develops out of beauty.

LAWRIE GROOM

Lawrie Groom is an expressionist artist whose work is characterised by simplified but exaggerated abstract form. Lawrie’s pictures illustrate his interest in silhouettes, the power of the long, single, continuous line that captures the essence of an emotion, mood or situation, and how brush strokes and colour change the temperature of a work.

His typewriter art (inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé’s visual poems and Guillaume Apollinaire’s calligrammes) expands Lawrie’s verse into shapes to be seen, said out loud and studied, simultaneously; where the rhythms of syllables are enhanced with shapes and silent spaces.

Influenced by Maurice Denis, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Sydney Long, Amedeo Modigliani, Odilon Redon, JMW Turner and Fred Williams, Lawrie studied art criticism at the VCA and enjoyed en plein air painting with John Yule, and drawing with Graham McKenzie at RMIT, Martin Yeoman in London and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris.

Fear and Curiosity

The fascination with darkness, encompassing both fear and curiosity, has been a perpetual theme for me. Its lawless universe tempts us to venture beyond our comfort zones, while also instilling trepidation. In 'Fear and Curiosity,' I explore this duality by merging images and text from different eras,

These reflections on the human condition manifest as glimmers on etched metal, capturing fleeting moments in the vast sea of causation. The profound 'mezzotint' black, pursued by printmakers, conceals mysteries from our past and echoes of the present. We yearn to embrace an unconstrained world while risking our comfort.

Within the dark expanse, sparks illuminate the void, revealing the weathered reality etched in pitted steel. Amidst celestial depths, numbers govern the moon's dance and space's flux. A glimmer of hope leads us to new pathways. Light streams into magical rooms, penetrating the darkest recesses of thoughts, illuminating the future.

MOLECULAR ORBITALS

Molecular Orbitals is a collection of acrylic and mixed media pieces. The pieces represent how mobility can be impacted by unforeseen internal and external events. Internally my diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis and, external COVID lockdown rules, and travel bans were two factors that caused limited mobility.

Amoeba like shapes with radiating lines symbolise a desire for a return to ease of movement, physical movement such as in everyday tasks, and movements to engage with family and friends. Some of the amoeba contain tribal motifs of my Filipino flag and tattoos (fish, houses, the sun) some contain playful representations of ice cream cones or mosaic tiles as memories of previous travels.

The colour schemes are from the pain scale; green/neutrals is no pain while crimson is unimaginable, unspeakable pain, the colours represent the emotional ups and downs experienced during the time these works were being created. In summary, this collection asks the viewer to reflect on personal experiences of desire for movement and connection with the world around them.

Jess Silverio is an abstract artist working in acrylics, oil, and mixed media. His work is energetic, sophisticated, and whimsical. He draws on his training as an Interior Designer, to create works that play on colour, form, and unity.

Jess recently moved to Melbourne after 8 years in Sydney and is also a global traveler. He holds an MFA in Healthcare Interior Design and a BFA in Interior Design from the New York School of Interior Design where he completed various art classes ranging from drawing, painting, ceramics, and art history.

Art and design have always been a passion of Jess’ life, His art is how he sees the world around him. “My paintings are fond memories of places I have been, people I have met, or even a casual conversation with an old friend captured on canvas.” Jess’ art conveys a sense of joy, romance, and wellness.

GREENWATER

In may 2022 I had the honour to be invited into the lands of the Yolngu in east Arnhem Land. Gapuwiyak is where the people who work in paradise would go to for their annual holidays, if they knew it was there. You can keep your tourist centres of the Kimberly and Kakadu - all good, please enjoy. Not everyone is built to drive the Central Arnhem Road, then drive 75kms further than one can go, swim in and camp beside a crocodile infested river, and be stalked by a bull buffalo along the banks of that river only excel in that environment.

Spending time in the Australian armed forces had prepared me for that experience and I took away a deep admiration for the history of the country and its people. I almost expected some great lost fauna to wander out of the bush, pass by our camp and head down a well-trodden game path for a drink. Such was my sense of childlike wonder, that I continue to have for the place. Greenwater is the byproduct of that trip. I have been exploring the theme of survival in a hostile environment, which includes physical and emotional dangers and the exploitation of the natural world and its inhabitants, which will become more evident in future exhibitions.

“Tar and Tears”

Hailing from Melbourne, Ayden and Rachael form a creative duo melding abstract expressionism and ceramics. Ayden, a seasoned artist with a background in creative direction, infuses paint and found objects into evocative pieces. Rachael, a skilled ceramic technician, contributes her mas- tery to the assisting and making of handmade ceramics. Both delve into shared themes, escaping closed-minded environments, grappling with identity and sexuality, and the weight of relation- ships and loss. Their collaborative work weaves narratives of suppressed authenticity and resil- iency, unraveling the impact of societal norms. Ayden and Rachael’s artistic fusion presents a poi- gnant exploration of self-discovery, echoing universal experiences. Their art beckons viewers to embark on their own introspective quests while finding solace in the intricacies of human expres- sion.

“Tar and Tears” was born from shared struggles, the sculpture embodies the intangible burdens of youth. A haunting amalgamation, it feeds on past pain—the artist’s unspoken grief, societal confines, and bruised innocence. Crafted with empathy, the creature beckons us to confront our shadows, revealing the power of resilience amidst fractured memories.”

'The deliberate fragility of this work unveils itself as an ephemeral ballet, a creature starved of the sustenance of anguish and sorrow, destined to wither into the embrace of time.'

Toorloo Arm

Toorloo Arm is a response to my stay onboard FLOAT as an Artist in Residence in Lake Tyers/Bung Yarnda, East Gippsland on Gunaikurnai country, during January 2023. I spent two weeks exploring the Toorloo Arm of the lake system by kayak.

Inspired by surrealism, cubism and abstract expressionism and the art of Brett Whiteley, John Wolesley, Arshile Gorky and Joan Miro (particularly his ‘Constellation’ series), I approached creating these experimental drawings in an exploratory way, bordering on Automatism. I intended to illustrate harmonious, balanced ecosystems, as I kayaked through my memories of the waterways and banks. The addition of collage was used, including charcoal frottages gathered from the banks of Toorloo Arm. Winding through the artworks, they aim to represent the waterways and ground, and strengthen connection to place.

The works explore themes of connection between humans and nature, cosmology, native ecosystems, discovery, and appreciation of First Nations culture and knowledge.

Shared Horizons: Exploring the Thai-Australian Relationship

“Shared Horizons: Exploring the Thai-Australian Relationship" celebrates the deep and multifaceted connection between Thailand and Australia. Through the artistic lenses of three artists—Shin Koyama, Emma Hodges, and Kitikong Tilokwattanotai—this exhibition delves into the diverse cultural landscapes and shared experiences that have shaped the Thai-Australian relationship.

Shin Koyama, a versatile Japanese-Australian artist, works with various mediums such as printmaking, ceramics, wood carving, and painting. Based in Chiang Mai, Shin is constructing a private museum to exhibit the works of Thai, Japanese, and Australian artists.

Emma Hodges, a non-binary artist, weaves their personal experiences of their mixed Thai, Chinese, and Anglo-Australian heritage into their art, acting as a bridge between the three cultures.

Kitikong Tilokwattanotai, a Thai artist, received his Master of Art in Printmaking from the University of New South Wales. Tilokwattanotai's bold use of colours invites viewers to explore the shared narratives and connections that bind Thailand and Australia together.

"Shared Horizons: Exploring the Thai-Australian Relationship" serves as a reminder of the enduring bonds and shared histories between Thailand and Australia. Through the diverse perspectives and artistic interpretations of Shin Koyama, Emma Hodges, and Kitikong Tilokwattanotai, this exhibition celebrates the beauty of cultural exchange and the strength of a relationship that extends across shared horizons.

SHIN KOYAMA

Shin, a versatile artist, explores diverse mediums like printmaking, ceramics, wood carving, and painting. His work combines contemporary themes with traditional Japanese influences.

Born in 1947 in Isesaki, Japan, Shin started as a textile designer for Ishihara Sangyo. In 1983, he moved to Sydney, Australia, establishing a printmakers gallery.

In 2013, Shin expanded internationally, opening a ceramics studio in Jingdezhen, China. He also set up studios in Arita, Japan (2014), and on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, Thailand (2018). Collaborating with local artists, these spaces foster creativity and craftsmanship.

Based in Chiang Mai, Shin is deeply involved in the local art scene and is currently building a private museum to showcase the works of Thai, Japanese, and Australian artists.

EMMA RANI HODGES

Emma Rani Hodges is an emerging artist who grew up on the unceded lands of the Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri people. Their practice explores their mixed Thai, Chinese and Anglo-Australian heritage through a post-colonial framework. Working in the language of expanded painting, they draw on personal narratives and insert marginalised voices into the dominant cultural discourse of white Australia. Fluctuating between image, text and object, their work resists easy categorisation. They combine incongruous material (painting, textiles and found objects) to assert that their multiethnic identity can exist as a cohesive unified whole and challenge the view that individuals of mixed heritage are 'caught between two worlds'.

Moon Dog

The moon hung suspended from lifeless tree branches, its glow resembling flames devouring the night. Below, a dog barked with a furious intensity, as if possessed by madness. People were strewn about, either collapsed or piled upon one another, in a bizarre scene that defied reason.

Amidst this peculiar chaos, the dog stood atop the human heap, its gaze fixed upon the moon. A curious partnership unfolded before their eyes. The moon, typically a symbol of serenity and illumination, had transformed into an enigmatic conductor of discord, echoing the dog's relentless cries with its own haunting lament.

As the peculiar duet between the dog and the moon continued, the surrounding people grappled with the overwhelming noise. They covered their ears, contorted their bodies, and writhed in discomfort.

Yet, within this surreal spectacle, I aim to illustrate beautiful chaos and ambiguity between reality and dreams, reality and imagination, causing a delightful confusion.

The Reclamation of Terra

Since the early 20th Century, the trans identity has been forming into what we see now as the modern trans rights movement. However, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated in a 2022 climate change report that “there is nothing natural about extreme weather conditions”.

What good is global equality if the earth is rapidly unravelling? Nature has always been a great healer. I’ve always lived in overwhelmingly noisy cities. Being out in nature eliminates the noise and allows me to recalibrate. As someone who was diagnosed with autism in adulthood, it makes sense that a void of constant assault is healing.

This series is a call to arms. I ask my rainbow family and allies to unify to fight the global climate crisis and overturn this eminent disaster with the might of our world changing movement. Help me save the soulful balm that is our natural planet.

My ceramic sculptures are born from a childhood of solitude as an only child. In those moments of loneliness, I found companionship in objects, giving them personalities and character. This fascination is evident in my work, where I delight in adding legs and expressive faces.

Each sculpture is a creation of friendship and imagination. As I shape the clay, I imagine crafting a new companion for myself, envisioning them dancing and celebrating with me in my bedroom.

Mushrooms hold a special significance in my art they mirror my own journey. Like mushrooms,

I find comfort in darkness, but I also strive to grow and thrive, radiating beauty.  I incorporate local vegetables and fruits to create plaster molds, symbolizing my connection to my surroundings and the nourishment that brings my glowing mushrooms to life.

Through my sculptures, I invite viewers to embrace the magic of imagination, celebrate the transformative power of friendship, and find joy in the dance of life. May my work inspire others to discover the beauty in ordinary objects and moments that surround us.

Holding up the Sky

Holding up the Sky aims to reflect upon the juxtaposition between nature and man-made forms, and the importance for humankind to become in touch with their essential, natural selves. The images contrast the smooth flowing organic forms of the eucalypt with the geometric, machine made, architectural constructions of the buildings.

The magpie, as a major focus in the exhibition acts as a symbol of defiance against the ‘progress’ of humankind. The magpie is a beast that when treated inappropriately will swoop and peck at its targets. But when treated appropriately this intelligent cognisant bird will be a willing and able partner in a celebration of the world we live.

At the end of 2020 , like many of us, I was struggling emotionally and finding it difficult to come to terms with what was important to me. During this time, which was obviously often spent in isolation, I found respite in my relationship with the Magpies that lived in the area. The interactions I had with them would make me more mindful in my daily rituals and tapped me into the greater consciousness of the natural world. At first, I just sat with the birds, but then I began recording and drawing my observations. Initially the drawing of the magpies was a way of channelling into a mindful creative process, it later became almost an obsessive tribute to them as a beast.

The birds fill the room as one off screen-prints in white. The Perspex they are screen printed on, not only acts as a contrast to the landscapes and their wooden surfaces, but also as a mirror; allowing the viewer to reflect upon themselves and the role they play within the planet.

Rush is an artist musician from Melbourne Australia.

Having completed a TOP at Huntingdale tech and a Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in printmaking at VCA, he has been actively involved in the creative world. Whether it be in his crazy, confronting puppet shows called Velvet Tongue (which was featured on television numerous times), working commercially as an illustrator or animator, the creation of graphic novels and children’s books, partaking in artists in residence programs, curating big group art/music showcases, teaching art or playing music, Rush has always found a way to stay actively engaged creatively.

JARDIN SECRET

In French 'Jardin Secret' is an expression for a realm of feelings and thoughts that are private, and little- or unrevealed; serving as an intimate hideaway for oneself.

Beside the combination of the sensual and surreal as a main subject, another layer added to the Jardin Secret in this series is what the negative of the images behold themselves. One as well as the other contains a sense of secrecy in their nature.

Through experimenting in the darkroom - e.g., exposing the light sensitive paper with a flash during its development and so, reversing the positive into negative - the potential of the image is revealed.

The final artwork results to a dreamlike, multifaceted outcome that balances the delicacy of light and darkness.

STEFFI TANIAN

Exhibition dates. 23 AUGUST - 3 SEPTEMBER 2023
Opening Reception : Thursday 24 AUGUST 2023, 6:00 - 8.30pm

Steffi is an artist residing and making on Wurundjeri Country in Melbourne’s west.

Steffi’s practice centres around clay and embodies the natural world and free flowing movement, taking cues from her time immersed in nature as an ecological conservationist and gardener.

This body of work toes the line between sculptural expressions of organic form in the Australian landscape, and figurative pieces giving form to human movement – celebrating the ties between us and our ecosystems. Each piece is built by hand with minimal intervention from tools, eschewing perfection in favour of emulating natural processes and telling a story of the connection between maker and piece.

“There need be no lasting sorrow for the death of any of Nature’s creations, because for every death there is always born a corresponding life.” John of the Mountains: The Unpublished Journals of John Muir

Death is hard to look at, a glance and then we turn our backs and change the subject. Full of fear, sorrow, or pain, Death is not easily embraced. But when we take a closer look, we see that Death can be beautiful. Without it, Life would not be possible.

When you walk in the woods, you are surrounded by this cycle. Look up and witness the birds flitting from limb to limb, gathering food for their nestlings. Look down and see a fallen tree, its bones providing nourishment and support for the next generation. We look at death and we see loss, but my paintings look at Death and see Life.
